GCL Madrid Delivers Fireworks as Valkenswaard United Stun Championship Leaders

When the stakes are sky high and every stride counts, the strongest teams rise to the occasion. In a gripping two-round showdown at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, Valkenswaard United did just that - seizing back-to-back wins in the Spanish capital and shaking up the 2025 GCL Championship race.

But this wasn’t just a repeat victory. It was a testament to experience, evolution, and the powerful impact of mentorship in top sport.

A New Chapter, Written by a Familiar Hand

While Valkenswaard United clinched the GCL of Madrid in both 2024 and 2025, only one name has been constant in those victories: Gilles Thomas and Ermitage Kalone.

The young Belgian rider - who joined the GCL ranks as an U25 talent just four seasons ago — has quietly matured into one of the most composed and consistent athletes on the circuit. Now riding shoulder-to-shoulder with living legends like Marcus Ehning and Hans-Dieter Dreher, Thomas is the connective thread in this team’s Madrid magic.

“We all came here with the same goal - bringing our best horses,” Gilles said after the win. “It wasn’t easy to decide who would ride Round 2, especially after Marcus jumped clear. But he was so supportive behind the scenes. That’s what makes this team work.”

The combination of fresh horsepower and calm experience paid dividends. With Ehning’s round one clear on Coolio 42, Dreher’s power ride with Elysium, and Thomas anchoring the team with a crucial clear, Valkenswaard United once again stood atop the podium - but this time, it was Gilles leading the charge.

GCL Madrid Unpacked: The Day After

From Protégé to Power Player

Gilles’ journey on the GCL circuit is a story of growth through opportunity. Initially brought in as a promising U25 rider, he’s learned from the best - not just through observation, but by riding alongside them. Teaming up with the likes of Marcus and Hans has allowed him to absorb the mindset, strategy, and focus needed to thrive at the elite level.

That investment is now bearing fruit. And with a horse like Ermitage Kalone - another rising star turning heads with his scope and attitude - Gilles is not only proving he belongs; he’s showing he can lead.

Championship Shifts and Swans Under Pressure

Despite losing out on the win, Shanghai Swans held their ground to maintain the overall lead in the 2025 Championship. Their second-place finish brings them to 96 points, still ahead - but with their margin narrowing.

A four-fault round from Christian Ahlmann and a clutch clear from Katharina Rhomberg was just enough to keep their advantage intact. “From the team point of view, it was good,” said Ahlmann. “We kept the leader’s armband — but I made it tough for Katharina, and she really saved us.”

Just behind them? Valkenswaard United and Cannes Stars powered by Iron Dames, now tied on 83 points each. The battle is tightening - and it's only Stage 5.

Top of the Table After Madrid

As we leave the Spanish capital behind, here’s how the top of the GCL Championship looks:

  • Shanghai Swans – 96 pts
  • Valkenswaard United – 83 pts
  • Cannes Stars powered by Iron Dames – 83 pts
  • Monaco Aces powered by Iron Dames – 63 pts
  • Prague Lions powered by Czech Equestrian Team – 61 pts

Looking Ahead: Cannes Awaits

Madrid proved once again that the GCL is a game of precision, partnerships, and psychological resilience. With Valkenswaard United climbing fast, Shanghai Swans under pressure, and new names making their mark, the next stop — the glittering coastal glamour of Cannes (5–7 June) — is set to be another defining stage in an already unforgettable season.
