Madrid is located on a plateau 650 metres above sea level and is the highest capital city in Europe. The land that now holds Madrid was said to have been inhabited since the stone age, dating back to around 860 A.C. but the official city of Madrid was not established until the 9th century.

Madrid is also one of the culinary capitals of Europe and is at the centre of innovative Spanish cuisine with stunning restaurants. There is also the opportunity to sample regional Spanish fare and much loved tapas. Nightlife in Madrid is legendary and there are many bars and nightclubs on offer. The locals are often out until dawn, eating, drinking and dancing once the sun has set. All of this against a backdrop of stunning architecture from medieval mansions and royal palaces to baroque buildings and the latest contemporary masterpieces.
