Throwback: LGCT 2022 Finals in Riyadh

Throwback: LGCT 2022 Finals in Riyadh

In an event that feels like just yesterday, today we throw back to the 2022 Longines Global Champions Tour Finals, hosted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for the first time. A thrilling showdown as top riders jumped under glittering Arabian night skies for their place on the podium, the very first LGCT of Riyadh saw the 2022 champions crowned.

Writing the next page in the history books, the incredible Ben Maher was crowned the 2022 LGCT Champion of Champions. Making history and taking the title for no more than the third time, Maher stood along side second place getter Pieter Devos, and Christian Ahlmann in third.

Following his Champion of Champions crowning and his phenomenal season victory Maher smiled: “It feels a little bit surreal. The whole Global Tour really pushed the sport to the next level over the past years and I’ve taken part in many legs and am thankful to be involved. It has been great sport with all the best horses and riders in the world here and Christian and Pieter really pushed it to the end."

In a thrilling weekend of top sport, and not to be outdone by the LGCT Finale, the most competitive GCL round 2 of the 2022 season took place. It was the Berlin Eagles powered by Fundis who snatched the 2022 Championship title away from Stockholm Hearts to be crowned the new champions and take home the lion's share of over €6 million prize money.

Talking of his teams win, an ecstatic and relieved Kukuk revealed: "It feels amazing, I think there was quite a lot of pressure on us this weekend and both of us said well ‘we hope that this day goes over quick’. In the end now we are very, very happy – we did a great job over the whole season. We took it very seriously and hard work pays always off and I think that’s what it is about today.”

That’s a Wrap – LGCT Finals 2022
