Step inside the strategic world of elite show jumping as Backstage Pass reveals how surface selection shapes the championship race at LGCT Shanghai.

Secrets of the Sand: Inside the Shanghai Stage of the 2025 LGCT Championship Race

Go behind the scenes as the Longines Global Champions Tour lands in Shanghai for Stage Three of the 2025 season. In this special Backstage Pass episode, we dive into the crucial details that shape championship success - from selecting the right horses for the unique surface at the Shanghai Juss International Equestrian Centre, to understanding how the world’s top riders prepare for another expansive sand arena.

While the city’s sophisticated charm and modern skyline provide a striking contrast to the vibrant, festival atmosphere of the LGCT of Mexico City presented by GNP Seguros, the intensity of competition remains just as fierce. With championship heavyweights like Max Kühner, Edwina Tops-Alexander, Ben Maher, Simon Delestre and Henrik von Eckermann, as well as podium veterans such as Marcus Ehning, and defending LGCT Grand Prix of Shanghai winner Gilles Thomas all on site, every tiny decision could tip the balance between victory and defeat.

One crucial - and often overlooked - factor? The surface beneath their hooves.

Behind every major appearance on the Tour lies a carefully considered plan. Stage 1 in Doha challenged riders on the state-of-the-art sand footing of the Longines Arena at Al Shaqab. Stage 2 shifted to the lush grass of Campo Marte in Mexico City. Now, Stage 3 in Shanghai brings a return to sand - ahead of another switch back to grass when the Tour heads to Madrid for Stage 4.

At this level, surface preference isn’t just a minor detail — it’s central to performance. Some horses are versatile, seamlessly switching between sand and grass. Others have a strong preference, excelling either on the natural feel and slight unpredictability of grass, or the consistent, secure footing offered by expertly prepared sand and fibre arenas. Choosing which horses to bring to each event can be a defining strategic move.

In this episode of Backstage Pass, Oliver Lazarus takes viewers inside the decision-making process that goes into every start. As he shares, "Trust and confidence is key - in each other as horse and rider, and in the surface we jump on."

Get an exclusive look at how the world's best manage these fine margins - and what it takes to stay ahead in one of the most competitive seasons yet.
