Ireland’s Richard Howley secured the top spot in the CSI5* 1.45m Lugano Diamonds Trophy on the final day of the Longines Global Champions Tour of Rome. The Irishman raced to the finish aboard the 15 year old bay gelding Mansini Ltd, posting an unbeatable time of 50.73 seconds and claiming the win by just 0.04 seconds. Hot on his heels was Victor Bettendorf of Luxembourg. Bettendorf tried to better Howley’s time to no avail, but came home clean aboard Cancun Torel Z to secure second place. France’s Edward Levy set the bar high early on in the class with Lyon van de Plataan posting a time of 51.72 seconds and ultimately securing a top three finish.
Celine Schoonbroodt-De Azevedo soared across the course aboard Deesse des Embruns to try to catch Howley. The Belgian rider came home clear on a time of 52.34 to claim fourth place. Rounding out the top five was Italy’s Emanuele Gaudiano riding Julius.D. Gaudiano raced across the ring with his ten year old gelding, delivering a time of 52.78 seconds and securing a top five finish on home turf.
