Tess Carmichael was among the 2* riders competing at the first-ever Longines Global Champions Tour of New York and spoke of her “dream” experience as an amateur rider in the Big Apple.

The British rider has competed at many event on the LGCT circuit and jumped at the opportunity to participate in the inaugural show on Governors Island in New York - winning the 1.30m class on her mare Bangle on the final day.

Tess said: “I honestly don’t think it has sunk in yet, riding here. It was a great opportunity. It has been a fantastic experience competing at the first LGCT of New York in the 2* classes The facilities were great and the stabling was really nice with air conditioning for the horses too and everything was nice and easy for the grooms.

It was the first time Tess had flown her horses across the Atlantic and she said: “I could never imagine coming here, flying the horses here and competing in this incredible venue. The people of Peden who take care of the horse flights are amazing, they deal with everything and they are so professional that you feel confident and relaxed about the horses flying to the show. They take so much care and they are so experienced you feel really comfortable that the horses are in their hands.”

The event on Governors Island was an eight-minute ferry ride from Lower Manhattan and the show ground offered breathtaking views of the Statue of Liberty and the City skyline - a truly unique backdrop for show jumping.

Tess, who is often joined at the LGCT events by her family to watch her in the 2* competitions, said: “It is amazing, you are in Manhattan with all the skyscrapers and people everywhere and then you come on the boat for a short trip to Governors Island where everything is green and quiet and it is so nice for the horses. The atmosphere was amazing and the crowd for the first year were excited and really involved. People enjoyed taking the short ferry ride because it was all part of the adventure.

“The horses are relaxed, they can be hand-grazed and then you can walk them by the water’s edge and you look across to the Statue of Liberty. It has been an unbelievable experience I will never forget. I am so happy my family are here too, it makes it really special and GCT shows are real family occasions. GCT pushes the boundaries and Jan has shows in places you would never expect like here in New York and in Miami Beach.”
