Flashback: Best of Monaco 2019
The magical back-drop of Port d’Hercule and the iconic Prince’s Palace in Monaco provided a three-day spectacle of top-class show jumping alongside fantastic entertainment last June. The world's best horses and riders arrived to face challenging technical courses in one of the smallest arenas on the tour, where precision, speed, scope and bravery were essential for success. The arena is right alongside the super-yachts of Monaco, and nestled in the former Formula 1 pit lane, making this a truly unique destination for top-class show jumping.
The enchanting Riviera location and luxurious facilities at the Monaco event combined to deliver a stunning experience for families, VIPs, sponsors, owners and riders. Monaco, which also plays host to Formula One and ATP Masters tennis, is also an international hub of sport with many high-profile fans attending events. HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and other members of the Royal Family are patrons of the event and they joined business leaders and celebrities to cheer on the riders.
In the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix du Prince de Monaco presented by Tennor, barely a second separated the top four riders in a breathtakingly fast 10-way jump-off where Bassem Mohammed (QAT) and Gunder stepped up on the podium as the runner-up, while the lightning-quick combination of Julien Epaillard (FRA) and Usual Suspect d’Auge could only manage a third place finish. The victory would go to Maikel van der Vleuten (NED), who had the audience on the edge of their seats with an incredible fast round on Beauville Z in the 10th leg of the circuit.
Meanwhile in the GCL team competition, Scandinavian Vikings secured their first ever GCL win after Evelina Tovek and Geir Gulliksen kept cool heads under enormous pressure as the last riders to go in a high-octane competition. A beaming Geir said: “When [Evelina] jumped clear it made it easer for me - both horses jumped amazing today, we deserved this."
